Star Renegades Is Coming To Console On November 19

Roguelike sci-fi tactical RPG Star Renegades is coming to consoles soon. You can pick it up on Xbox One and Switch on November 19, or PlayStation 4 on November 25. I reviewed the game when it hit PC, and enjoyed it quite a bit, especially the art style. Check out the full review here.

If you’re curious as to how it plays, it’s a roguelike with a dimension-hopping conceit where you have to time your abilities in sequence in order to interrupt opponents, land critical hits, and stay alive. While you can make it through some of the regular battles without embracing the mechanics, bosses will tear you apart unless you master the time line. There are some unlocks like new characters you can take with you from run to run but it leans closer to a traditional roguelike than a progression-based roguelite. Check out the spiffy new trailer below!

Visage Review — Awesome Apprehension

Publisher: SadSquare Studio
Developer: SadSquare Studio
Release:

Rating: Teen
Reviewed on: PC
Also on:
PlayStation 4, Xbox One

SadSquare Studio’s Kickstarter-fueled Visage starts with a bang and never lets go, ratcheting up tension and delicious dread. For fans of horror games, Visage is a nightmare that you can’t miss; it’s the scariest game I’ve ever played. Through effective use of a chilling atmosphere, rising apprehension, and just the right amount of shocks and surprises, Visage is the haunted house from hell that scares your socks off. While the game suffers from poor inventory implementation and some of those indie “jank” bugs where you might get stuck in an environment or fall through the world, those annoyances can’t shake the fact that Visage does terror incredibly well.

Click here to watch embedded media

You begin the game in a house without a real sense of what is happening or any real goals. The hands-off approach toward discovering it’s many mysteries could be off-putting for those looking for guidance, but wandering the haunted halls without instruction is extremely effective as it builds up from flickering lights to shuffling spectral aberrations. It surprised me that after many hours of play I would still find excuses to explore well-lit segments of the house instead of heading down to the basement, even though I had already spent tons of time down there. A testament to the game’s strength is that even a mundane laundry room or TV nook can induce trepidation. From a beguiling cat clock to an incessant radio that loves to turn itself on, there’s enough disturbing flavor in the normal objects you find in the house.  Is there something in the dark there with you? The answer is … sometimes. And that question kept me on edge, always. Then, things get weird. The walls begin to ebb away, impossible designs and architecture appear, and new worlds open up.

Visage is a journey into the psychological realm as well as the real, and you may find yourself transported to lost treehouses, grim cemeteries, psychiatric facilities, or even a supermarket during your explorations in the house. By doing so, you learn the tragic and terrifying stories of others who have lived in the cursed location. Each “chapter” is tied to a character and has its own puzzles, and they are thematically incredible journeys through both the real and the surreal. A camera identifies hidden threats and secrets during the panic of a flash as the only light source; mirrors take you to the depths of the bizarre; or the eyes are always watching you as you scramble from misshapen bodies in the hospital hallways. Each arc tells a tale with satisfying and horrible endings that convey the world that you’ve stumbled on. It’s not a happy one, and every environment and chapter keeps you buzzed with equal parts adrenaline and fright as you open each door and solve each challenge.

Along the way, light sources and pills keep your sanity high. Consumables are ostensibly limited resources, and you’re encouraged to be sparing with your sanity-restoring stock as the house messes with your mind by slamming doors, shutting off lights, or meddling with electronics. Let your sanity slide too far, and you’re likely to get a visit from something much worse than some muffled footsteps or a fleeting face. Using items the way you want is often a huge pain when interacting with the environment. Attempting to set candles down, arrange your inventory, or do just anything with your items is often an exercise of battling the controls.

Visage creates a palpable playground for fans of horror to revel in, tapping into different flavors of fear to create an unsettling experience. All too often, genre titles fall back on repetitive jump scares and shock value, but Visage lets the house burn into your brain and leaves you questioning every decision to open a door or descend a staircase.

Score: 8.75

Summary: Explore a truly terrifying haunted house.

Concept: Discover the horrible secrets of a haunted house in sanity-sapping survival horror

Graphics: Effective use of lighting and environments keep the tension sky high

Sound: Screams, laughter, shuffling creaks and disturbing noises abound, setting an appropriately spooky stage

Playability: Visage demands the ability to forgive its awful inventory management and to enjoy a good scare

Entertainment: Visage admirably succeeds at building dread and capitalizing on that investment with compelling stories and chilling situations. This is the scariest game I’ve ever played

Replay: Moderate

Genshin Impact 1.1 Update Arrives On November 11

On November 11, Genshin Impact gets its first substantial update. The 1.1 update features new characters, a seasonal event, the final chapter of the Liyue questline in the main story, a new reputation system, and PlayStation 5 compatibility. That’s a lot! Some of the big new characters coming on the five-star front are Childe and Zhongli. Childe is a Hydro archer, Zhongli is a Geo polearm user, and they both have a lot of new tactics and skills to bring into combat. New four-star characters are also coming with Xinyan and Diona, and as we all know from running Fischl and Xiangling for the last month, four-stars can be incredible characters as mains or supports.

During the first seasonal event, Unreconciled Stars, players take on various challenges over a two-week period to earn special rewards and participate in co-op challenges. Among the rewards is a copy of Fischl, so if you don’t yet have the Electro princess unlocked, this is a great chance to score a free character.

City reputation rewards allow you to become masters of the large areas in each region. Portable waypoints, portable cookware, a treasure compass, and many other new tools will become available for players, allowing them to truly become champions of the major regions. These will apply to current major cities like Mondstadt and Liyue, but expect these systems to continue as new cities and regions come to the game.

How Bots Could Ruin Games Forever

What’s scarier than monsters, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night? We’ve all seen bots in games by now. I don’t mean players setting up systems to run to farm crafting materials in predictable routes or to play cards in a set order; I’m talking about bots designed by developers. Now, you might be saying to yourself, “What’s wrong with bots?” Bots can fill lobbies to make sure games can launch, they can make matchmaking take a lot less time, and hey, it’s always fun shooting down an automated opponent and getting a free kill in a field with dozens of human opponents running around. But there’s a lot more to these innocuous A.I. additions, and they have implications for all kinds of multiplayer experiences. With the trends we’re seeing in data acquisition, user privacy, and monetization models, bots are headed for dangerous implementation.

The Ghost In The Machine

On the surface, pairing up players with bots seems like a good thing. No one wants to wait more than a few seconds to find a match, whether it’s in an online shooter lobby or a mobile card battler. Beating up on bots might not seem like an issue, even if it’s changing your rating, ranking, or other parameters over time. Depending on the game, you may not even be aware your opponent is a bot. Maybe a bot is your sole opponent, or perhaps the game can field many bots, but the takeaway is that the developer can tweak the challenge (or lack thereof) directly by bot prescience. While adjusting the difficulty in this fashion may seem harmless, it becomes a sketchy proposition as we dive in.

Consider a game that has tiers, unlocks, and monetization based around winning. Would you be more likely to make a purchase if you were defeated by a new titan unit added to a battle game? What if you lost to it three times in a row, and then an in-game ad for a titan pack plays on your screen with a cute little jingle? What if that ad inspires you to purchase the hot new unit? What if the games knows you bought the unit, so it matches you up against bots (which it knows you can beat) to give you several easy victories?

In that scenario, your mind would undoubtedly link these wins with your recent purchase. And that purchase would be tied to happy feelings, big victories, and good associations. When it’s “working,” all this stuff potentially happens without the user even knowing, and that could be a massive issue. It is not really a competitive game when the matchmaking tool is only moving you from one session to the next by prioritizing 1) keeping you playing, and 2) putting you into situations and scenarios where you’re more likely to make a purchase. While this doesn’t apply to every game or situation, the impact that these dial-turning options can have on your play experience is alarming.

I Feel Good! So Good!

In addition to the terrifying scenario where you’re playing against non-entities in a constant string of value propositions where the goal is to squirt dopamine into your brain and link purchases to feeling good, recent times have given us other bot concerns. It’s fairly commonplace for a game to pair you against nothing but bots for your first few matches; this has become ridiculously common in battle royales, especially mobile battle royales. They do not tell you this. Instead, the intent is to make you feel like you’re a god of the game on your first match. Whether you actually learn how to play or are good at the game are irrelevant factors.

Sure, you can make the case that the first few matches should be against bots so that the player doesn’t get killed in three seconds and delete the game forever. Engagement. Yeah, that makes sense. But they don’t tell you that you’re fighting bots, and people take screenshots of their epic wins and post them on Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Tinder… Okay, maybe not Tinder. This is a great way for these games to drive faux-organic interest; everyone posting an epic win against automated foes (who are designed to be beaten) becomes an unwitting product ambassador. It would be a lot better if the games told you that you were going to be playing against bots, but then where would the big win sensation come from?  And of course, after the bot games are over and you’re settled in, that’s when the real tinkering can be done.

Algorithmic Enjoyment

Looking at how the system works, we need to examine how a game sets you up with X bots, Y players, and Z skill level of enemies. More specifically, how does it find the closest matching environment where you will still get that dopamine rush and the thrill of victorious moments but not letting you crush every game and get bored? In some respects, the science behind these algorithms is a precarious and horrifying tightrope. It’s trying to balance your games to keep you playing, keep you interested, and ultimately get you to make a purchase, whether that be cosmetic or functional. Utilizing this data to create a match may not play the song for you, but it assembles all the notes for the tune to happen. It’s a concept we used to be able to just call “fun factor,” but now it’s actual science based on billions upon billions of data points. Is it really playing a game if everything has already “played out” in a hypothetical algorithm the moment you press play? That’s a question we’ll have to answer as bots continue to become a bigger factor in multiplayer experiences – whether we know they’re there or not.

PlayStation App Updated For Remote Game Storage Management And More

Can’t wait for that PlayStation 5? You can get ready with the updated PlayStation App, which is expected to hit iOS and Android today. The app has a fresh look, allows for voice chat with friends, a smattering of social features, and more. However, probably the biggest hook of the updated app is the ability to remotely manage your software. You can buy games and start those hefty downloads before you get home, which will hopefully make life a lot easier on big release days.

Getting everything convenient and easy to use under one unified app is nice, but there are some potential pitfalls in our consolidated future as well. You may not care that an algorithm may be listening in to you and Uncle Jimmy discuss a fresh cut of pizza over voice chat while planning a Genshin Impact session, but you never know how things could turn out… In the meantime, update your app and get ready to download all kinds of fun stuff!

Check out the new features video below for a full look at what you can do in the PlayStation App, or go read more on the app here.

Chris Metzen Is Back With Warchief Gaming

Chris Metzen, former senior vice president of story and franchise at Blizzard Entertainment, is back in the game development ring. Warchief Gaming was a tabletop gaming club in Orange County, CA, but now it’s going to be a development studio as well. Metzen is joined by Mike Gilmartin, former vice president of quality assurance at Blizzard, in this new adventure pursuing the development of tabletop games.

Chris Metzen

This might be one of the worst times in recent history to be pushing tabletop products given the COVID-19 crisis, but hopefully things are way better on that front by the time Metzen’s new adventure bears fruit.

Mike Gilmartin

Warchief Gaming was originally a gaming club founded in 2018, but now it’s going to be making games too. The original club intends to remain open and continue operations even as the development studio begins in earnest.

Check Out The Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Launch Trailer

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is scheduled to arrive on November 13, coming to Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. The game offers a single-player campaign that takes place after the original Black Ops title, a new zombies experience, and of course traditional multiplayer. The campaign offers multiple endings, scenarios with choices and consequences, and of course some of our old favorite characters like Mason, Woods, and Hudson.

Traditional multiplayer is loaded with vehicles for both transport and assault this time around, allowing players to cruise on the sea, drive around dunes, and even take to the sky. Check out some of our thoughts on multiplayer here and here. Warzone is also going to be infused by Cold War, but to what extent and how we have yet to truly see.

Today, we have a new trailer for the game. What’s in it? Ronald Reagan. Super spy Russell Adler. Lots of guns and explosions. Yep, that’s a Call of Duty trailer alright. Check out the trailer below for a taste of the action that’s getting closer every day.

Silent Hill’s Ito Masahiro And Akira Yamaoka Collaborate On World of Tanks Halloween Event

World of Tanks has a special Halloween event beginning today that features work from Silent Hill art director and monster designer Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka. While it’s been a long, long time since we’ve seen anything out of the Silent Hill universe, perhaps this weird PVE event can give a taste of the strange and scary.

Starting today on October 26 and running to November 9, players can group up in teams of five to take on the dangerous denizens of the mysterious town of Mirny-13. Bizarre events have transpired that make the town a terror to navigate, and perhaps intrepid groups can solve the riddles as they make their way through the haunted town.

Players can unlock special crew members, styles, expereince and credits in the event that they can carry over to the core game even after the event ends. These include special skins designed my Masahiro Ito!

We shipped off a few quick questions via email to Akira Yamaoka about his involvement in the project, which you can check out below. Check out the trailer for the event as well!

GI: Have you ever played World of Tanks?

AY: Of course. It must be a game I really like to work with.

What’s your favorite soundtrack that you’ve ever worked on?

The soundtrack for Silent Hill was very well-received, and I was personally happy with the final product as well.

What are your favorite composing techniques to build spooky/creepy and suspenseful feelings in your music?

Making the listener feel uneasy and uncomfortable. You can break music conventions by staggering chords, or intentionally adding sounds that conflict with chords. There is a process to finding a tone which evokes physical disgust. There are many other methods.

Horror Game Visage Releases On October 30

Horror game Visage has been in early access for a long time. Now, it’s coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 30 — just a week away! Hell, we talked about the first pieces of the game years ago around this time. You can check out that video right here, though lots has happened since then!

Click here to watch embedded media

Visage is an atmospheric trek through a haunted house that tasks the player with discovering the tragic circumstances around each family member, for a total of four “tales”. In early access, two tales were available, this 1.0 release brings the total to four with around fifteen hours of content.

If the rest of the game is like Lucy’s Early Access tale, brace yourself for some serious scares and challenges as you struggle to keep the lights on and your sanity stable. While the game was previously playable on PC in the Steam Early Access program, this full release is also coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Be prepared to wander in the dark as the game taps into classic haunted house fare and then gets absolutely absurd as you enter the darkest recesses of the mind. Sounds pretty wild doesn’t it? Yeah. Well, we can’t wait to give it a try either, just in time for Halloween! Check out the new release date trailer right here, and a much older gameplay trailer as well. The gameplay trailer gives a much better idea of what kind of terrifying things to expect!

Hearthstone’s Madness At The Darkmoon Faire Is Coming In November

Hearthstone’s next big expansion is Madness at the Darkmoon Faire, and it’s scheduled to arrive on November 17. The set features old gods doing all kinds of evil cosmic horror things admidst the colorful carnival backdrop of the Darkmoon Faire. If you’ve ever played World of Warcraft, chances are you’ve hit up the Faire before in a quest to score some cool tickets, yummy treats, or to play some of those fun carnival games. Here in Hearthstone, the Faire is loaded with new toys to play with!

Giant old god cards are back, with fresh styles and abilities. N’zoth, C’thun, Y’shaarj and more are going to be spreading their cosmic corruption all over the denizens of Azeroth as they attempt to enjoy giant turkey legs and flagons of ale at the Faire. These old gods are expensive to cast and come with flashy skills, but the corruption mechanic may be the most interesting thing about the expansion.

Many card games turn into a pursuit of “playing on curve” in order to have an efficient deck. That is, playing a one-cost card on turn one, a two-cost card on turn two, etc, in order to stay ahead of the game and your opponent. Corruption cards reward you for holding on to spells and maybe playing them later than curve allows, as you need to play a higher-casting cost card in order to trigger the corrupted effect. On some cards, this is just a stat boost, on others it has more significant effects. Either way, you’re hopefully going to have more decisions to make during a game instead of just plopping everything down by the numbers.

Check out a sweet presentation about what’s coming in Madness at the Darkmoon Faire right here.

Click here to watch embedded media

In addition to the new expansion, a new mode was announced and also launched in early access. Duels! Hearthstone Duels is like they took the dungeon crawling roguelike experiences that they’ve been creating for single-player adventures over the last few years and set it loose in a PVP competitive format. I spoke highly of these dungeon romps back when they first started to show up, and that praise is likely to extend to this format.

In Duels, everyone gets to be broken and overpowered, but it’s about who can come up with something more busted over the course of a run. With 15 of your own cards, special heroes, wild abilities, powerful passives, and incredible treasures, Duels is a mode with a ton of creativity and chance as you build your strategy over the course of multiple games. Early Access is available for a “pre-season” trial for those that preorder Madness at the Darkmoon Faire, but the mode will be available for all at no cost on November 12. Check out more on Duels below!

Darkest Dungeon II Coming To Early Access On Epic Games Store In 2021

Red Hook Studios announced today that Darkest Dungeon II is coming to Early Access on PC via the Epic Games Store in 2021. While that’s a fairly vague window, it’s some significant news for the title we haven’t heard a whole lot about since its initial tease. While we only have the EGS announcement for now, the original title came to almost every platform imaginable after its initial release, so hopefully this one eventually makes its way to console as well. I really enjoyed the first game because I got to use the word aphotic in a review, and I didn’t think I’d ever have the chance to do that.

If that wasn’t enough, aspiring dungeon crawlers are treated to a new trailer featuring many of our favorite characters from Darkest Dungeon, highlighting the franchise’s signature, striking art style. You can check out the trailer below! Get yourself a glimmer of hope, because if it’s anything like the first game, we’re in for some serious punishment — and epic triumph in the face of defeat!

New Character Klee Arrives In Genshin Impact Today

Ready to gamble on gacha for a new character? The first new playable character coming to Genshin Impact, the 5-star Klee, arrives today as the star of a new banner. That means you can have a great shot at acquiring this tiny character that makes huge explosions, if you have a big stack of Primogems saved up or the willingness to open your wallet.

A story quest at AR32 lets you try out the character, but a new trial to test out Klee will also be available to see if you want to spend your hard earned currency (in-game or otherwise) on trying to pick up this Pyro character.

While many of us are running Xiangling for our spicy fire character and the elite few running Diluc, Klee may give the current pyro all-stars a challenge. Klee features a skillset that embraces all kinds of explosions, and like many other characters in Genshin Impact, combining her skills with other characters and abilities can yield surprising and powerful results.

Klee’s banner also features a drop rate increase for some 4-star characters that you might be interested in picking up constellations for during this event. Check out our guide to gacha, constellations, and much more right here. I think Klee looks like a cool powerful AOE fire character, but I’m saving my Primogems for the next region. Yeah, I’m aware that it might be a while. When gacha banners are involved, it pays to save!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Are Coming To Smite

Third-person MOBA Smite has had some really wacky crossovers in the past, including an Avatar: The Last Airbender battle pass. Now, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming over in the same fashion, with the pizza-loving shelled heroes becoming skins for classic Smite characters.

Osiris gets a Leonardo skin, Sun Wukong can become Donatello, Loki becomes Raphael, and Mercury shows off a Michelangelo skin. What about Splinter and Shredder?

The battle pass featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is scheduled to land in November! Check out the trailer below.

What Is Monster Hunter Rise?

Unveiled during a Direct event, Monster Hunter Rise is the next big game in the Monster Hunter franchise coming to Nintendo Switch. Unlike many of the 3DS games, the map is a fluid experience — only one load into the area, no loading between various map sections or chunks. A brief chat with the development team on Zoom allowed us to dig into some of the various aspects of Monster Hunter Rise that make it stand out.

A new feature called the wirebug (which actually seems kind of similar to the Clutch Claw from Monster Hunter World) allows players to both traverse the environments at high speed and also weave the wirebug into powerful, weapon-specific attacks. Sidekicks have been a prominent part of the franchise for a while, offering support in combat. You’ve probably spent a lot of time with Palicoes, our feline friends, but now a new sidekick is about to come into the spotlight — the palamute! It’s a doggo! Palamutes are more offense-oriented than palicoes, and you can even ride them around like mounts. Cats and dogs? Guess the next pet that shows up in the Monster Hunter series! Get a good look at the palamute and a lot more in the TGS trailer below.

Players can party up in four-player multiplayer in both local and online co-op. In Monster Hunter World, it was often frustrating to have to go through cutscenes over and over again. Thankfully, cutscenes can actually be skipped in this game. There won’t be G Rank or Master rank quest experiences, only Low Rank and High Rank, though we don’t know if the higher difficulty tier may be added in the future. A maximum of three monsters can be on any map at any given time, similar to other games in the franchise. When asked about how the team determines which monsters to bring back to the games, the response was that they determine which environments and locations to create first, and then select monsters that would be appropriate to those areas.

Players can now all bring one pet companion into the four-player experience. If only one or two players are in a mission, they can bring two pets each! That’s a lot of bark, bite, and meow! All in all, from what’s known so far, Monster Hunter Rise looks similar to other Monster Hunter offerings, with a few slight iterations to keep things fresh. We’ll find out more as we plod toward release next year. And Monster Hunter Rise isn’t the only new title in the Monster Hunter universe coming to Switch. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is also on the way, you can check out our review of the first title here

Valorant Unveils New Map And Character For Act III

Riot Games is bringing Act III to Valorant starting on October 13. Various elements of the season will roll out over time, with the brand new map hitting immediately. It’s called Icebox, and it’s aptly named. A frozen facility with two detonation points, the new map has a focus on skirmish gameplay.

Oh, and there’s something else new on the map too — the zipline! Get vertical and get fast as you catch your opponents by surprise and speed quickly across the environment. Icebox is slated to be available on October 13.

A bit later into Act III on October 27, players can experience the new agent Skye. Hailing from Australia, Skye is a master of beasts. Kind of like a druid in futuristic military agent form, Skye can impair enemy vision, heal teammates, and sic her beast companions on opponents.

While Skye can heal multiple teammates at once, there’s a balance in her kit as she cannot heal herself. Bummer! Her ultimate can inflict nearsightedness on multiple enemies, which is sure to be an incredibly devastating ability. Being able to almost blind your enemies before breaching territory makes for a potent initiate, and foes would be wise to spread out or face a vicious gundown.

Of course, a new Act means a new battlepass too. Chock full of the usual cosmetic unlocks, players can work on the pass over the course of the Act. Remember the sweet Dragon skins? Act III brings a new skin kit for weapons. If you play the Sheriff, Spectre, Phantom, Ares, or Melee weapon, Singularity skins are available, with the entire bundle going for 8,700 VP. Send the enemy into the void, or something. Whatever, they look really cool.
